About

Picture
Sam Vatovey is an Australian artist whose practice centres on an intimate, intuitive dialogue with both landscape and the human figure.  Through her paintings and drawings, she prioritises an experience of place and subject over literal representation.  Her work connects directly with the senses.

Vatovey’s formal training began with studies in fine art and photography, foundations that continue to inform her material sensitivity and compositional approach. From 1990 she spent two decades living and travelling throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia, studying and immersing herself in diverse cultures and traditions before returning to Australia in 2010.

“After such a long absence,” she recalls, “I was stunned by the sheer diversity of the Australian landscape and by the freedom to wander within it.  That experience convinced me to place landscape, and my dialogue with it, at the centre of my work.”

Today Sam Vatovey maintains a studio on the edge of the Noosa National Park at Sunshine Beach, where proximity to forest, ocean and heathland continually inspires her paintings and drawings.  She has presented in solo and group exhibitions, been selected as a finalist in gallery prizes, received awards, and has acquisitive work in both public and private collections in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Singapore and Italy.
